Project Overview

It is said that when the Caucasus region was covered by sea, Tbilisi lay at its bottom, and the 1,515-kilometer-long Mtkvari River, which is 10 million years old, was part of an internal current of this sea. After the sea dried up, the Mtkvari carved its path as a river. Over time, the river’s form was altered: islands were taken from it, its bed was confined between highways, and the river, once integral to Tbilisi’s identity, became a dividing rather than a uniting force within the city. “All Because of Muddy Waters” is an interactive installation from which the river’s water flows. Touching it changes our physical state, bringing us closer to the Mtkvari River. Through aluminum prints, we explore microscopic depths of the Mtkvari, a key part of Tbilisi's identity that has existed for millions of years. Walking through the installation connects us emotionally to the origins of Tbilisi and helps re-establish a bond with the lost river.
